Gatherers Winter Doings
October 2015 – March 2016
Our Autumn activities started with a visit to Tropical world, Roundhay Park in Leeds, on a mellow October afternoon. We passes an hour strolling round Amazon vegetation, admiring species of butterflies, birds, piranhas and other tropical fish. This was followed by a meal at the Roundhay Fox where, thanks to Jenny’s intervention, we got a free dessert.
In November we followed last summer’s trip to Fountains Abbey with its “sister” abbey near Leeds, Kirkstall Abbey, which workshop founded in 1152 by monks from the former abbey. After looking round the C12-14 ruins, we travelled forwards several centuries as we crossed the dual carriageway to the Abbey House Museum. The cobbled street with its variety of Victorian shops and residences was of particular interest.
Then came a Christmas party at “Castle Howard” (Howard’s home) and a Boxing Day walk around the estate of Harewood House to burn off the calories of the Christmas festivities. After the walk we had a bring and share meal chez David, who also kindly led the walk.
There is nothing like a delicious 3 course meal on a cold January evening and Jean did us proud with a Dutch beef stew and apple and blackberry crumble. It was in aid of Samaritans and David told us about the work he does with them and we were given a quiz of 19 questions. Howard won a box of Quality Street.
A pudding and poetry party at Caroline’s at which a variety of poems, some traditional and others more contemporary, were shared.
Two concerts at St Chad’s Church given by the Leeds Symphony Orchestra (in which Caroline plays). Music included Dvorak’s “New World Symphony” and Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto (November) and Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto in the February one.
At trip to Harrogate for a meal and to see the Great Gatsby on stage. Still to come – one of George’s wine tasting events.
