GATHERERS April – September 2012

The last six months proved to be something of a washout … I hardly need remind you. None of our activities were rained off, although some were rained on. Not least the performance of the York Mystery Plays set against the backdrop of St Marys Abbey. A warm & sunny day – then as the crucifixion drew to a close, a wind blew across us and after the death a heavy downpour stopped play for ten minutes. We were under cover, but the players had to leave the stage and done waterproofs over their costumes. Eventually the play resumed and reached its climax with the resurrection and final judgement. Eleven of us enjoyed the play greatly. As Christians it had a deeper meaning for us.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June was an occasion for celebration and A very kindly put on a garden party on the Tuesday. Alas we did not get the warm summer weather we had hoped for but thankfully the rain held off. We celebrated the occasion in a marquee decorated with Jubilee bunting and a tempting spread of food set before us.

One happy couple were disguised as Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth … when the masks were removed they turned out to be G and P whom we would like to congratulate on their forthcoming wedding. It was G and P who led us in the singing of the Blaydon Races, fitting as they are both from the North East.

H’s walk along the Leeds waterfront from Granary Wharf to Clarence Dock proved very popular, despite the unseasonal showery day. We learned a little of the points of historical interest and the afternoon was rounded off with tea in the top floor of the Hilton, followed by a meal at an Italian restaurant on the waterfront.

Other events included:
A visit to the Roundhay Gala on a chilly Saturday in May. The blustery wind put paid to the scheduled parachute jump.
The Stanza Stones walk at Ilkley in June
An afternoon at Temple Newsam in August with some looking round the house and others visiting the farm.
The weekend at Chester was enjoyed by all who went and will be told in another article.
Saturday 15th September – “Bring & Share” at C’s. What is in store for the winter?
